  • Circumstances that Impact Planning and Delivery of Instruction:

    • As an Education First (EF) sponsored school, the majority of the materials I currently use are owned by EF. A base lesson and pacing plan is provided for each unit with embedded assessments to ensure students are meeting standards.

    • While scripted lesson plans are available, my school encourages teachers to be creative in our lesson execution.

  • Collaboration

    • At EF Gading Serpong, we highly value collaboration between staff. We also see the benefits of students collaborating with their peers in other classes. Since many students have been with us their entire educational career, they know each other well and are comfortable working together. It is not uncommon for teachers to switch, combine or shuffle classes for a day.

  • After-School Programs

    • EF Extra—additional academic support is available for students at the request of a teacher, a parent/guardian or the student themselves. One-on-one tutoring lessons can be requested with any teacher at any point during the school year. These tutoring sessions are between one and two hours in length and act to close knowledge gaps that students may have that are inhibiting progress in their normal classes.

    • GrammarPro—an extra program offered for students who are struggling with grammar in written English. GrammarPro is a computer software that tracks a students specific needs and growth to improve their writing skills in conjunction with individualized instruction from one of our staff members.

    • IELTS and TOEFL Preparation Courses—many of our students wish to attend an English speaking university after graduation. In order to achieve this goal they will need to successfully complete an English proficiency assessment. We offer group and individualized preparation courses for both of these exams.

Classroom Information

One of the classrooms I frequently use

  • Content and Grade Level:

    • I currently work as an English as a Foreign Language Teacher.

    • Our classes are 60 minutes, 90 minutes, or 120 minutes depending on the age of the students.

    • I have 8 different core classes serving between 8 and 16 students per class.

  • Assignments Outside of the Classroom:

    • Once a week, I host a Life Club for students. Each week a different class attends. The purpose of this time is for students to practice their English in an authentic way during conversations. Previous Life Clubs have included cookie baking, sports matches, and a book club.

  • Technology

    • While I do not have computers in my classroom, I have easy access to them if necessary.

    • Each classroom has an interactive white board or a projector.

    • Nearly 100% of students have smart phones that can be leveraged for online learning during instruction.

Student Information

  • Gender breakdown

    • 65% female and 45% male.

  • Ethnicity breakdown

    • Much like the United States, Indonesia is a melting pot of various ethnicities. However, nearly 100% of our students self-identify as ethnically and culturally Indonesian. For this reason, my school does not track specific data about students’ ethnicities.

  • Inclusion and other types of special-needs students:

    • Unfortunately people with disabilities in Indonesia do not share the same rights as their counterparts in the US. Schools often turn away students that require Special Education services to avoid the additional fees. There are designated ‘sekolah luar biasa’ or special needs schools where most of these students are enrolled. For this reason, there are no special education services offered at my school and data about students with special needs is not tracked. I requested access to any information that may be available and my request was denied.

  • Academic Levels

    • EF has students aged three to 18 as well as business English adult learners.

    • Students are classified according to the English language proficiency levels outlined in the TESOL standards within each core domain of speaking, listening, reading, and writing as follows:

      • Small Stars—75 students classified as emerging.

      • High Flyers—213 students classified as developing.

      • Trail Blazers—367 students classified as expanding.

      • Front Runners—245 students classified as bridging.
